SEC Games of the Week Oct. 6th

Kentucky(5-0) at South Carolina(4-1)
This is the game that lets the world know if Kentucky is a real contender for the SEC East this year. Kentucky has the SEC's best scoring offense averaging over 46 points a game going against a SC defense that lost it's biggest play maker in Jasper Brinkley. Kentucky so far has had a balanced offense, averaging 223 yards rushing and 268 yards passing per game. On the flip side Kentucky's defense is unable to stop anyone on the ground, ranking 11th in the SEC in rushing defense.

South Carolina will look to pound the ball against a porous defensive line at Kentucky , though at this point in the season the running game has been less than spectacular. An interesting matvh up in this game should be Woodson against the SEC's #1 pass defense. If South Carolina is unable to get penetration into the backfield it will be along night in Columbia.
Prediction: Kentucky win 31-24

Florida(4-1) at LSU(5-0)
This game was being billed as a preview of the SEC Championship game, that is now in question as over the last 2 weeks Florida has been exposed. Auburn and Ole Miss to a lesser extent showed how to beat the Gators. LSU is not an offensive juggernaut, but they have the best defense in the country. Mark this down, this is the game that Tim Tebow gets hurt in. When Tebow run the QB option up the middle, expect to see the defensive line of LSU deliver some vicious hits. This one will not even be close so I'm not gonna waste much time on it. The game will not be as close as the score makes it appear.
Prediction: LSU win 30-21

Georgia Bulldogs at Tennessee Volunteers

This Saturday will go a long way to deciding whether Georgia still has a shot at the SEC East this year and whether Phil Fulmer still has a job next year.

Georgia boasts the SEC's 6th best scoring offense, averaging over 32 points a game versus Tennessee's league worst scoring defense, allowing over 37 points a game. On the other side of the ball is a Tennessee offense that is scoring an average of over 34 points a game against a Georgia defense allowing just over 17 points a game.

Look for the Georgia defense to blitz early and often to keep Eric Ainge on his heels and feeling the pressure most of the afternoon. Ainge has had to press a little more with the defense not providing enough overall help, and the running game being merely average. Expect there to be numerous interceptions in this game and the Georgia secondary steps up big in this game.

Georgia has notched 3 wins in a row in Neyland Stadium under Mark Richt. Look for that trend to continue. There simply is no better at getting his team prepared for big road games than Mark Richt. Tennessee simply isn't doing enough on defense right now and the rent is due on Richt-Neyland Stadium.

Prediction: Georgia wins 31-20

He asked the Tennessee fan first: "You can have one final request; what will it be?" The UT fan replied, "I wanna hear Rocky Top one more time!" The Warden says "Alright, that'll be fine."

The Warden then looks to the Georgia fan and says " You too can have one final request; what will it be?" The UGA fan looked at the Warden and said: "Kill me first!!"

Lets put Saturday behind us

This past Saturday was 3 quarters of Bad Defense followed by 1 quarter of an offensive explosion. Here's the stats.
Georgia win 45-17.

Passing
Matthew Stafford 13 of 21 for 144 yards / 1 TD
Rushing
Thomas Brown 16 for 180 yards/3 TD's/11.3 avg.

Q / A with Ole Miss Blogger

This week I did a Q / A with Seth from Hotty Toddy Blog about the Georgia vs. Ole Miss game. Here are the answers.

1. How does Ole Miss expect to stop Georgia RB tandem of Knowshon Moreno and Thomas Brown?
Our defense is young but talented. They showed great improvement from the Vanderbilt game to the Florida game. We were able to hold Florida to 30 points. The bottom line for our D is tackling. Our D has speed but we've had way too many missed tackles. The best way for us to stop your run game is to make our tackles.

2. The Ole Miss player gave everything they had against Florida last week. How do you see this affecting them coming into this week?
I think it only helps. What we need most is confidence. Almost defeating the national champions is a great boost. I don't see a let down.

3. What are the keys for an Ole Miss win?
Tackling!
Establishing a run game to keep your offense off the field.
Making TD's instead of Field Goals in the red zone. (We had 4 field goal attempts against Florida. If one of those would have been a TD we would have won.

4. What are you most worried about playing Georgia?
There are a lot of things that I worry about playing Georgia in Athens, but the one that is at the top of my list is our defense. We have to make tackles and hold GA to three and out.

5. What is your prediction for the game?
I believe this will be a close game. I am going with a toss-up.

I'd like to end by thanking Seth for taking the time to answer my question about this weeks game and to wish Ole Miss good luck with the rest of their season.

SEC Games of the Week

Not much to choose from this week. Most of the games should be fairly easy to pick. Well, enough complaining from me, lets look at the games.

Alabama(3-1) vs. Florida State(2-1)
(Neutral Field)
This is Alabama's toughest game away from home until the season ender against Auburn. For Florida State, a win over a brand name team is a must after slogging its way through the early part of the year. Alabama is going to struggle to pound the ball on the Seminole defensive front. Clemson got a tremendous game out of James Davis in the opener, but FSU quickly put the clamps down on the Tiger running game. Can Florida State score? The Jimbo FIsher era hasn't exactly taken off for the Seminole offense, struggling with its consistency and having major problems getting the passing game going. The offensive balance of Alabama will be too much for the Seminoles to overcome.
Prediction: Alabama 24-10

Mississippi State(3-1) at South Carolina(3-1)
This is a match-up of teams who's only loss is to LSU, and thats not anything to be ashamed of. Matchup-wise, South Carolina is almost perfect for the Bulldogs. There's no pass rush to take advantage of the porous MSU offensive line, the run defense is mediocre after the loss of Jasper Brinkley for the year. MSU remains as one dimensional as it gets. South Carolina's secondary is playing extremely well and has no fear whatsoever of getting hurt through the air. Don't expect much in the way of offensive fireworks. The two teams are strangely alike, but South Carolina is better on both sides of the ball.
Prediction: South Carolina win 15-13

Auburn(2-2) at Florida(4-0)
What many thought might be a preview of the SEC title game, now appears to be a battle for survival, with Auburn needing to win to stay in the SEC race, and Florida needing to win to stay in the national title hunt. Florida, for all its talent and athleticism up front, hasn't done much to get into the backfield so far. With only seven sacks so far, and just 21 tackles for loss, the defense isn't applying nearly enough consistent pressure. Right now Cox is playing badly as the QB, and Auburn has become a one dimensional running team. Unfortunately for Auburn, Florida has been playing great against the run.
Prediction: Florida win 31-17

Ole Miss at Georgia Prediction

Georgia always plays great on the road, unfortunatelt this game is at home where the Dawgs have seemed to have trouble recently. However that will not be a problem this week against Ole Miss. Under Coach O Ole Miss has not had many signature wins and are 1-3 this year with losses to Vanderbilt, Florida and Missouri and their lone win coming against Memphis.

All time Georgia is 29-12-1 in 42 games against Ole Miss. The Rebels defensive line has not shown the ability to pressure the QB so far this season and the DB's and LB's are having problems defending the mid range pass, which has been a staple for Georgia so far this season.
My Prediction: Ole Miss keeps this one close thru 3 quarters but Georgia pulls away in the fourth and wins by 10.
Georgia Win 31-21

ATHENS, Ga. --- University of Georgia redshirt freshman tailback Knowshon Moreno has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, according to an announcement by the league office on Monday.

Moreno, a 5-11, 207-pound native of Belford, N.J., tied senior Thomas Brown with a team-leading 74 rushing yards during the Bulldogs' 26-23 overtime win over then-No. 16 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Moreno also scored the second touchdown of his career on a 6-yard run in the third quarter, giving Georgia a 17-10 edge, and had two catches for 22 yards.
Through four games, Moreno leads Georgia with 342 rushing yards for an average of 85.5 yards per game, which is ninth in the SEC (second for freshmen) and 56th in the nation. Also, Moreno is second on the team with 120 receiving yards and was part of a Georgia offense that generated 377 total yards against the Crimson Tide.

The Bulldogs host Ole Miss at Sanford Stadium at 1:07 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29. Gilberry....here's your crow!

Many of you remember the comments from Alabama's DE Wallace Gillberry."But after the game Saturday, I can tell you anything you want to know -- his birthday, his telephone number, his home address. I'm serious, because I will know. I've got to know where to send the flowers after the game."

Well Mr. Gilberry, in case you were wondering about the stats from Saturday nights game I have compiled them for you.

Wallace Gillberry sacks: 0
Alabama sacks: 0
Final Score: Georgia win 26-23

I could tell that you were not aware of Matthew Stafford's home address, it was easy to tell as you never made it in the same zip code during the game. The closest you got to Stafford was the post game hand shake.

Of course "I'm just Joking." and "I don't talk trash."

Alabama Recap

This was truly a great win for Georgia, though there were some things i saw that worry me going forward.

The defense seems to let up with about 5 minutes to go in the half and the game. Not sure if this is because we have undersized DE's or whether the intensity just lets up. The receivers seemed to play a lot better this game, though I will be surprised if Chandler starts at TE this weekend. Moreno appeared to be a beast, though looking at the stats it doesn't show.

Now for the Stats.
Passing
Stafford - 19-35/224 yards/2 TD's/2 Int.
Rushing
Brown - 20 rushes for 74yards
Moreno - 17 rushes for 74 yards/1 TD
Receiving
Bailey - 5 catches for 75 yards
Brown - 5 catches for 39 yards/1 TD
Henderson - 3 catches for 36 yards/1 TD
MoMass - 2 catches for 23 yards
Moreno - 2 catches for 22 yards

This is the first game that Knowshon Moreno did not have over 100 yards combined between rushing and receiving. He only managed 96 yards which isn't to shabby. Overall I think this game shows the character of our team. After watching the South Carolina vs. LSU game, their is no shame in that loss, though we all know that the outcome could have been much different had the receivers caught some balls.

26-23 in Overtime!

Alabama Jokes!

Q: What do both Bama fans and maggots have in common?
A: They can both live off a dead bear for years.

One day in an elementary school in Tuscaloosa, AL, a teacher asks her class if the Alabama Crimson Tide are their favorite football team. The whole class says yes, except for Little Jimmy.
The teacher asks, "What's your favorite football team Jimmy?"
Little Jimmy says, "The Georgia Bulldogs "
The teacher asks, "Well, why is that?"
Little Jimmy says, "Well, my dad is a Dawg fan, my mom is a Dawg fan, I guess that makes me a Dawg fan."
The teacher angered by his reply says, "If your dad was a moron and your mom was an idiot what would that make you?"
Little Jimmy says, "Well, I guess that would make me an Alabama fan."
Q: How many Alabama fans does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: One, but he gets 3 credits.

Q: How do you make University of Alabama cookies?
A: Put them in a big Bowl and beat for 3 hours.

Q: How many University of Alabama freshman does it take to change a light bulb?
A: None, it's a sophomore course.

Did you hear about the Tide fan who was so upset that the Dawgs beat Alabama that he tried to commit suicide by jumping out of his basement window?

It was reported that Alabama head football coach Nick Saban will only be dressing twenty players for the Auburn game. The rest of the players will have to get dressed by themselves.

This is Alabama Football

Does anyone remember the Top 10 list of dirtiest programs in College Football? Well let me remind you who was #1.

1. Alabama. This is all you need to know about the skill and greatness of Alabama. An NCAA committee found that booster forked over $150,000 to a high school coach as a guarantee that a defensive lineman would attend Alabama. Yes -- $150,000. Now that is how you break the rules, people.

Some might say this is old news and has nothing to do with Alabama football today. But the cheating continues in Tuscaloser.
From The Sporting News: Alabama has self-reported three secondary NCAA violations in football since Oct. 16, 2006.Two of the violations came after Saban's hiring on Jan. 4, though one happened without the knowledge of Saban or his staff. Alabama will soon submit a report to the Southeastern Conference on allegations that Saban had improper contacts with three Miami prospects, athletic department spokesman Doug Walker said.

Bama fans can always live in the past though, those long ago glory days of Bear Bryant.....wait the Bear was found guilty of infractions also!

Institution: University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa
Date: 05-JAN-64
Facts Summary: Improper recruiting contact.
Violation Summary: Improper recruiting contact.
Penalty Summary: Public reprimand.
Involved Sports: Football

Checking the website the Alabama Crimson Tide has been involved in 4 Major violations.(1964,1995,1999,2002) There are too many minor violations to mention here.

SEC Games of the Week

South Carolina at LSU

What will happen:
This game will be close for about a quarter, at which point the LSU defense completely takes over after man handling Blake Mitchell. By the half this game will be a route.
Final Score: 42-10 LSU wins.

Kentucky at Arkansas

What will happen:
This one will be a shootout of epic proportions. This one should be billed as Andre Woodson vs. Darren McFadden. But that would be selling the rest of the team short. Expect this one to be won during the final 2 minutes. Two minute drills are run by the QB and because of that I'll give the nod to Kentucky.
Final Score: 34-31 Kentucky wins.

Georgia at Alabama
What will happen:
There are none better than Georgia on the road under Mark Richt, winning 10 of 11 in true road dates ( not including neutral sites). After being challenged by Alabama's DE and reading everything said in the papers this week I predict Georgia's offensive line to play very well this week and thus Georgia manages an upset in Tuscaloser.
Final Score: 31-27 Georgia Win.
Go Dawgs!

The Disrespect Continues!

As if the comments I posted yesterday were not enough, everyone seems to jumping on the Satam led Tide's bandwagon.

From the Birmingham News "You think it's crazy this week, Tuscaloosa, with College GameDay coming to your city? What's it going to be like Nov. 3? You know, when undefeated LSU visits undefeated Alabama?"

From the Hunstville Times "Three games into the season, Saban - playing almost entirely with Saban's recruits - appears likely to be 8-0 heading in the LSU game the first weekend in November. "

From ESPN Josh (Havre MT): "Do you think Alabama can handle Georgia at home and then basically on the road against FSU and be 5-0 at the end of September?" Bruce Feldman: (4:14 PM ET ) "I think they can and they will. I expect FSU to give them a tougher game."

From the AJC "Bulldogs too soft, coach lacks fire."

As Munson would say I hope we stomp on their faces with a Hob-nailed Boot.

The Blogosphere is all over the place with this story.
DawgBone.net , Kit over at Dawg-Gone Blog and the message boards are all talking about this.

Let the Trash Talk Begin!

Much like Pat Dye's statement that "Georgia wasn't man enough to beat Alabama", it seems that the trash talk has already started flying thanks to Satan's, I mean Saban's boys in Tuscalooser.

Alabama defensive end Wallace Gillberry had this to say about Matt Stafford "I don't know anything about him." Not to bad if he had stopped at that statement, but he didn't. He followed with this. "But after the game Saturday, I can tell you anything you want to know -- his birthday, his telephone number, his home address. I'm serious, because I will know. I've got to know where to send the flowers after the game."

He then stated this "I don't talk trash."
Not sure how things work in Alabama, but here in South Carolina and where i grew up in Savannah, GA that is definately considered trash talk.
I just hope that this is posted in the locker room for our offensive linemen to see.

Congratulations Jeff Owens #95

Jeff Owens was names SEC Defensive player of the week. He has 5 tackles and 2 tackles for loss in this past weekends games against Western Carolina. He also had a forced fumble during the game.

Read all about it here!

Georgia vs. Alabama

Wow, could I have been any more wrong when i wrote this. Well I guess you could point to this prediction and say that it was worse.

Alabama and Georgia shares one common opponent so far this year.

Western Carolina! Lets see how the Catamounts fared against both schools.
vs. Georgia 16-45
201 yards total offense/63 yards rushing/138 yards passing.
vs. Alabama 6-52
247 yards total offense/76 yards rushing/171 yards passing.

Georgia's offense vs. WC
362 yards total offense/140 yards rushing/222 yards passing.
Alabama's offense vs. WC
575 yards total offense/313 yards rushing/262 yards passing.

Defensively we appear to be about the same as Alabama, Offensively Alabama appears to be much better than Georgia, though 153 yards and 14 points came in the fourth quarter when it appears Satan...oops Saban was trying to make a statement.

Well it's now time for the prediction.

Defense: Advantage Georgia
Offense: Advantage Alabama
Coaching: Push
Special Teams: Push
Home field Advantage to Alabama

Unfortunately I'm afraid we have a little more than we can handle this week. Unless Georgia gets up and plays better than we have this season, I expect a loss. Still I'm gonna go with a Homer pick.....our guys come ready to play and make a statement in the SEC.

Final Score: Georgia wins a shocker 31-27

Delusional !!!

I've used that word alot lately. Mostly in referring to other teams fans. Oklahoma State's when they were saying that OSU would score 50 in Athens. Yardbird U's fans, well just because they are Lamecock fans!

Now I have to direct that term at Georgia's fans. We are delusional!

We as a fanbase have come down extremely hard on botht the Georgia coaches and players for the loss to South Carolina. But before the season I saw many of the same fans predicting a 9-4 or 8-5 season for the Dawgs. Which way is it gonna be? Did the Oklahoma State game change what you knew to be true before the start of the season? Did you buy into the hype?

I have to admit that I did buy into the hype to a certain extent, after that win I raised my expectations to a 10-2 season with a thought of winning the SEC East. But the Oklahoma State game did not change the facts. Georgia is a very young talented team. That talent may very well win us a few games that we should not win, however the youth will also cost us a few games that we should win.

Sit back, relax, pour yourselves another frosty beverage and cut the players and coaches some slack. The players read the message boards and blogs and some of the comments I have seen are completely uncalled for. These comments do bother the players!

There was an article written this summer about Carlos Thomas (#5 on SC's D).

He talked about how he started off well last year but then got a little down on himself after a bad game. He then talked about how he read the message boards and the gamecock fans were just crucifying him on the message boards.

He talked about the passion of wanting to play vs. the passion of wanting to please the fans. He admitted when he was playing games sometimes qoutes he had seen about himself would come up in his mind. Stuff like, "Carlos sucks" and "...this guy is no D1 player".

He said he realized he was going to read some stuff sometimes but during games those qoutes would just pop up in his mind and doubt would set in.

Then he went on to say that he expected to bounce back this year and he was going to stay away from message boards on the internet.

You would think that would be the end of player
bashing from the fans right?

SEC Games of Interest Sept. 15, 2007

Tennessee Volunteers at Florida Gators

Vols senior QB Erik Ainge was 23-for-36 against Southern Miss for 276 yards and two TDs. Ainge has thrown 83 passes this season without an interception. The 276 yards is the fifth-highest passing total of his career. Ainge completed his first seven passes against Southern Miss.

Florida scored 49 points in the first half to post a 59-31 win over Troy. The 49 points ties the most Gator points in a half under head coach Urban Meyer. The 59 points scored by the Gator offense are the second most by a Gator team under head coach Urban Meyer. The most is 62, set last season against Western Carolina. With the win, Florida extends its home win streak to 17 games, tied for fourth longest in school history. The win also gives Meyer a 15-0 record at the Swamp.

My Prediction: To close to call, however I think Florida manages to pull out a win thanks to the home field advantage, however Tim Tebow has an awful game and unless Urban Meyer protects him, he may end up injured.

Arkansas Razorbacks at Alabama Crimson Tide

Alabama improved to 2-0 on the season and notched its first SEC victory under head coach Nick Saban, as the Crimson Tide defeated the Vanderbilt Commodores 24-10 in Nashville. Redshirt freshman running back Terry Grant rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries to record his second 100-plus yard game of the season. Defensively, the Crimson Tide held the Commodores to just 57 rushing yards and held receiver Earl Bennett to just four catches for 52 yards.

Arkansas had a bye week and used it to prepare for their first SEC game of the season. The Razorbacks will travel to Tuscaloosa Saturday to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide at 5:45 (CT). In their last outing, Darren McFadden and Felix Jones combined for 280-yards and four touchdowns as the Razorbacks handled Troy 46-26 in the season opener.

My prediction: Alabama will not hold Arkansas to the same rushing totals as they did Vanderbilt. With the extra week to prepare I see Arkansas winning this one easily.

SEC OOC Game of interest

Louisville Cardinals at Kentucky Wildcats

The competition hasn’t been stout, but the Cardinal offense has been downright silly through two weeks. Louisville is averaging almost 700 yards and 65 points a game, moving the ball as if it’s on a constant power play. The Louisville defense got exposed in a huge way by the Blue Raiders. This was the same Middle Tennessee that was impotent a week earlier in a loss to Florida Atlantic. The Cardinals allowed 42 points and 555 yards, most of which came when the game was still competitive. If the poor tackling and breakdowns in coverage aren’t addressed immediately by Mike Cassity, Kentucky will score early and often.

With a 56-20 win over Kent State, Kentucky opens the season 2-0 for the first time since 2002. Dating back to last season, Kentucky has won seven of its last eight games. The win also gives the Wildcats a five-game win streak at Commonwealth Stadium, the first time that has happened since a seven-game win streak from 1986-87. For the second week in a row, the Kentucky offense had more than 200 yards passing and 200 yards receiving.( Sounds Familiar)

Prediction: Kentucky’s defense should perform well enough to at least slow down the Louisville offense. Their offense should also be at least as good as MTSU. It’s going to be a long day for Louisville in Lexington this Saturday. Kentucky pulls this one off in a high scoring affair.

AJ Green Update

I know alot of the Georgia faithful were really down on AJ Green after his showing against a superior Booker T. Washington team. AJ's stats so far this season don not look all that bad.

vs. Booker T. Washington
5 receptions for 52 yards
vs. James Island (played in the rain)
2 receptions 18 yards
55 yard punt return for a touchdown.
vs. Wando
9 receptions for 144 yards 1 TD
He also rushed for another TD while lining up as a QB.

Some things you may not know about AJ Green.

We all know that he is a gifted receiver, he also plays CB and is also the Greenwave's back-up punter. During his junior year he has lined up at the RB and QB positions.

What really strikes me though is what Hall of Fame coach John McKissick(544 career wins) has had to say about AJ.

"He does what's best for the team, A.J. throws the ball real well and is active back there. He'll do anything to help the team. He's not selfish. He's not a 'give-me-the-ball, give-me-the-ball' player. We'll use him a little more on kickoff and punt returns. He's an outstanding runner once he gets the ball in his hands."
To me that says it all. As a graduate of Summerville High School, I am fully aware that it is rare for Coach McKissick to single out a player to the media. Also I beleive that this speaks highly of the person that AJ Green is.

Recruiting

I was looking at Rivals.com today and noticed something that I'm sure was not on the site when I posted about Nick Williams.

Akeem Hebron is showing as a solid verbal for Georgia out of Junior College. This brings the total to 19 players. Hebron was suspended following his second alcohol related offense. It appears that Akeem Hebron is getting a second (or is it 3rd) chance. Let's hope he makes the most of it.

Mark Richt

Some posters on the internet are calling for the immediate firing of Coach Richt. While I believe that we have a coach that needs to be fired , Mark Richt is not the one. Coach Martinez is not the one either. The coach that needs to be let go is none other than the following.

That's right.....John Eason. He consistently makes highly recruited WR's unable to even catch a cold. After the Oklahoma State game I had hoped Georgia had turned the corner in that regard, but the old nemesis reared it's ugly head against South Carolina. Dropped passes cost Georgia the game.

Now I saw a post on a Georgia message board that i thought was funny. Maybe Eason shouldn't be fired. He should just be moved to another coaching position!

"Eason shouldn't be fired. He should be made the secondary coach. Few in the history of the game have shown such an ability to prevent talented wide receivers from catching the football."

Who...ummm What is a Catamount?

With this weekends game being against the Western Carolina Catamounts I thought it would be nice to do a little piece on former Catamount players. Also what exactly is a Catamount. After the former player list I’ll also answer this burning question….that’s to the Western Carolina website.

Paul Johnson - Class of 1974 - As Head Football Coach of the U.S. Naval Academy, Johnson received one of the coaching profession’s most prestigious honors in 2005, the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year.

David Patten -Athlete; wide receiver, three-time Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. Currently with the New Orleans Saints(NFL). View his player profile

Clyde Simmons - Athlete; defensive end, Philadelphia Eagles.

What is a Catamount?

- Western Carolina University's unique mascot and nickname for its athletics teams seems to always bring about the same question when the Catamounts play on the road ... "What exactly is a Catamount?"

Webster's Dictionary defines "catamount" as "any of various wild cats such as a cougar or lynx." Cats of the catamount variety, including the bobcat, have roamed the southern Appalachian Mountains, where Western Carolina University is located, for years.

The nickname evolved from a contest that was held on the Cullowhee campus in 1933. At the time, the school was called "Western Carolina Teachers College" and its teams were known as "the Teachers."

Everyone on campus was invited to participate in the naming of the teams. The usual names were suggested -- Bears, Indians, Panthers. However, the college wanted an unusual name, a name that few others had and that everyone would not copy.

The contest came down to Mountain Boomers, a small ground squirrel that scampers about the woods and is extremely difficult to catch, and Catamounts. The latter was the favorite of Head Football Coach C.C. Poindexter and was the nickname chosen. Poindexter wanted his players to be Catamounts with "fierce spirit, savage attacks, and lightning quick moves."

Western Carolina University is the only one of two NCAA schools playing under the Catamount moniker. Western is the only football-playing school in the nation using the nickname "Catamounts," with the University of Vermont being the only other school using that nickname.

Meltdown between the Hedges!

An offense that couldn't be kept out of the endzone last weekend was unable to get in this week.

Georgia was withing scoring range 6 times during the game and came away with 12 points(4 field goals, 1 missed FG, and missed 4th down conversion). Offensively inept, that is the way I would describe last night. We had receivers revert back to last year and drop very catchable passes. We also had a QB overthrowing some very wide open receivers. However if you look at the numbers we had a decent game. Our red zone offense was the problem. We were unable to score touchdowns, and that was the difference in the game.

I've seen some people placing the blame on our defense. People 16 points is not an ungodly number, hel if we had just connected on FG's each time we were in range the game is won.

Congratulations South Carolina, you executed much better than my Dawgs last night and deserved the win.

On win away from .500

How absoultely awful does your football program have to be when you see posts such as this on your Fan Sites. I was visiting our oponents website and ran across this gem of a post.

"Our football teams has an overall record of 516-517-44. One win makes us a .500 team. Not that it's all THAT important... but still a stepping stone.Beat the Dawgs!"

Why are they so proud of this fact? The last time South Carolina was .500 or better team , what did they do? I'll tell you they went 1-21 over the next 2 seasons.

Maybe South Carolina makes it above .500 sometime soon, but it will not be this week.
They may even make it this year. If South Carolina manages to win all they games they are supposed to win and can upset 1 team, they'll finish the season at .500 even.

Here's the list.... you pick the upset!
Georgia, LSU, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, Clemson.

Congratulations Coach Martinez!

ATHENS - Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator Willie Martinez as been selected as National Coordinator of the Week by Rivals.com in recognition of his efforts in Gerogia’s season-opening 35-14 win over Oklahoma State.

The Bulldog defense held the OSU offense to just 70 yards rushing and sacked quarterback Bobby Reid five times. The Cowboys also were limited to just three successful third down conversions in 13 attempts, and were o-for-3 on fourth down attempts.

OSU held the ball for 23 minutes, 31 seconds. Georgia’s time of possession, meanwhile, was 36:29.

Georgia is tied for 32nd in rushing defense and tied for 39th in scoring defense after one game.

Martinez is in his seventh season with Georgia. This is his third season as the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator.

South Carolina Prediction

I know I did the South Carolina prediction earlier in the Summer. But it's game week, and as the ex ball and chain always said "I change my mind too damn much."

This game still has me worried . South Carolina didn't show me much last week in their game with Lafayette and what they did show me wasn't good. Lafayette was able to run the ball on them at will, now was this because of the system they use or because Carolina's defense is not as good as advertised (much like OSU's offense). However, South Carolina always plays us close and any team coached by the Ole Ball Coach should be worried about.

Luckily Georgia's young defense had a chance last week to be tested by a decent offense. Also our freshmen on the offensive line got a taste of college level football last week against a Big12 defense.

South Carolina also has a young offensive line and when the Coach at Lafayette refers to them as weak, I believe that it bodes well for the Dawgs!

I see the Dawgs lines winning the battles in the trenches and Blake Mitchell running for his life for much of the game. This forces him to play come from behind football and he makes some mistakes that allow the Dawgs to close this one out early in the 4th.

Final Score: Dawgs 27-17 win!

Why I Hate the Gamecocks!

Losing is what Carolina does best!

Living in Florence, SC it is easy to grow to hate a team that in the larger picture matters to alomst no one. South Carolina is such a team. In the history of South Carolina football they have never managed to play in one the four major bowl games( Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta). They have also never won an SEC Championship, or played in the SEC Championship game, but this year is gonna be different.
I never despised any fan base until I moved here. Despite what their record says, Carolina has never lost a game. Bad calls, and unbeleivable plays are resposable for every loss they have ever had. It's time to send the chickens back to Columbia with another loss to start their SEC schedule!

Go Dawgs!!! Sic em!

Some History!

The last time South Carolina opened up with Lousianna-Lafayette is much like this years team. Carolina managed to double up the hapless Cajuns 14-7. That was 2003, in 2007 Carolina managed 28-14. Carolina clawed their way into the polls at #25 and then ventured into Athens intent on beating the Dawgs and making a statment.

What happened you may ask.... nothing much, just a 31-7 beatdown administered by the Dawgs.

Georgia opened that season also with a quality win against an OOC oponent in Orange.

Go Dawgs!

Week 2: Yard Bird University

After getting home from the game Saturday I checked in to see how the Chickens had done, and to my delight I saw that they fared poorly.

How does the SEC's "best" defense allow Lafayette to rush for over 250 yards, in Williams-Brice Stadium no less. Visit Cockytalk.com and see the meltdown they are having. This is a fan base that was trying to figure out who deserved to play them in the MNC game this year. Now they are trying to figure out if they can win games against South Carolina State and Mississippi State.

My thoughts on the upcoming game have changed somewhat after what I saw from both Georgia and South Carolina this weekend. I may have to revisit my prediction.

So the first game established 2 things in my mind concerning the Chickens.
1. Their Defense is not all that great. No doubt they are still good but have exposed some things that the Georgia offense can take advantage of.
2. Their starting QB will not have taken a snap under pressure before the Georgia game.

Looking good for this weekend. I'll post more as the week goes along

OSU Game Overview

Ok the first game is in the books with a Bulldog win.

Some of the Highlights!
Stafford 18-24 234 yards 2 TD's and 0 INT's and QB Rating of 184.4.
Team rushing was 142 yards. Of those Moreno had 70 yards and T. Brown had 48. Unfortunately Kregg Lumpkin was injured during the game(broken thumb), it is unknown at this point how long he will be out.

Fernando Velasco was named SEC offensive lineman of the week. A big congrats goes out to Mr. Velasco. Also the offensive line gave up only 2 sacks during the game and seemed to provide plenty of time for Matt Stafford to get rid of the ball and to open creases for the running backs.

Georgia's defense seemed to answer alot of question this past weekend against the "Worlds Greatest Offense". OSU offense was held to266 total yards. One of the major reasons for this is that it seemed that we had 3 defensive linemen in the OSU backfield at all times. Ok, maybe it wasn't that often, but the defense did have 5 or 6 sacks and 11 tackles for a loss.

Go Dawgs!!!

Game Week

Ok , Game week is officially here. Time for the trash talk to Start!
I'll start by introducing you to Oklahoma States mascot Pistol Pete!
Pistol Pete!

This is a team that is so hated by Willie Nelson that he sang about it. "Mama's don't let your baby's grow up to be Cowboys." Yes, it's true! He was referring to Oklahoma State Cowboys! Can you blame him.

This is a traditional football school, you can tell by the sub .500 record all time that the have. I hate to be the ones to tell you, you are not in Oklahoma any longer. Welcome to the Southeast, where football is more than a passion, it's a religion. Go Dawgs!!!!

Red-Out

This is cross posted from David Chings blog, please help us get the word out!

Word traveling around the UGA students is a RED-OUT for the opening home game against OSU. Many of us really want this to happen and for it to work successfully. ... Please PLEASE get the word out about this red-out to as many friends and fans as you possibly can. A RED-OUT against a visiting Big XII program on national television would give the Bulldog squad added publicity and attention, and we as students feel it would energize the team and the crowd to no end. We also feel like it would be a GREAT beginning to what could be a very promising season. PLEASE do everything you can to support this cause.

Tailbacks!

Today we take a look at the 3 players that will be competing for the starting tailback position this year.

Thomas Brown #20
Senior 5'8" 200 lbs.
Was injured in the Vanderbilt game in 2006. At the time of his injury he was ranked 3rd in kick off yardage in the SEC. Led the Bulldogs in Rushing in 2004 and 2005.

Kregg Lumpkin #6
Senior 6'1" 229 lbs.
The teams second leading rusher in 2003, missed the entire 2004 season due to a knee injury. Led the team in rushing in 2006.

Knowshon Moreno #24
RsFreshman 5'11" 207 lbs.
Whats really scary is that if KnoMo plays the same way he has practiced and scrimmaged, he will be the best of the group by a wide margin. I can easily see him as the starting tailback by the 3rd or 4th game of the season.

Defense

Today, I'll take a look at the Georgia Defense. Everyone seems to think that the Georgia Defense is to young and inexperienced to be good this year. Using the Rivals.com depth charts makes beleive we are anything but!!

DE - Roderick Battle: Sophmore
Appeared in 13 games last year as a back up with 2 sacks and 6 QB pressures.
DE - Marcus Howard: Senior
Appeared in 36 games over his Career, 11 as a RsFr, 12 as a Sophmore, and 13 as a Junior.
DT - Jeff Owens: Junior
Started 11 games last year and had 19 QB pressures, Played in all 13 games as a Freshman
DT - Kade Weston: Sophmore
Played in every game and had 6 starts in 2006 with 12 QB pressures as a freshman.
LB - Brandon Miller: Senior
Played in all 12 games in 2004, Started 10 games in 2005, Played in all 13 games with 5 starts last year.
LB - Darius Dewberry: Sophmore
Hargrave Military Academy...Rivals Prep School No. 11 player in country...Scout No. 8 linebacker in nation...tallied 61 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions and five pass break-ups from his linebacker position.
LB - Dannell Ellerbe: Junior
Appeared in 10 games in 2006 and another 10 in 2005.
CB - Thomas Flowers: Senior
Appeared in every game in 2004, Started every game in 2005, was injured for much of 2006.
CB - Bryan Evans: Sophmore
Appeared in 12 games with 4 starts in 2006
S - Kelin Johnson: Senior
Started every game and ranked 3rd on the team in tackles in 2006. Played in every game and had 1 start in 2005. Played in every game in 2004.
S - C.J. Byrd: Junior
Appeared in every game in both 2005 and 2006.

Looking back over the list of starters, we seem to have plenty of experience starting on defense this year. After looking this over I'm feeling alot better about of defense.

Go Dawgs!

Offensive Line

Today I start my look at the Georgia team prior to September 1st. I'll start with one of the biggest question marks for the team, The Offensive Line.

LT - Trinton Sturdivant 6'5" 294 lbs. Freshman
Entered Georgia in January; named Biggest Offensive Surprise of the Spring.

LG - Chris Davis 6'4" 292 lbs. Redshirt Freshman
Listed as number one LG at conclusion of spring drills in 2007.

C - Fernando Velasco 6'4" 328 lbs. Senior
Started every game in 2006 and named the team's most improved offensive player. Also received significant playing time in 2003 and 2004. Redshirted in 2005.

RG - Scott Haverkamp 6'4" 310 lbs JuCo Junior
Butler Community College...rated as the 58th best junior college player (all positions) and 7th best offensive lineman by Rivals.Com.

RT - Chester Adams 6'4" 330 lbs Senior
Started 11 games in 2006 at tight guard, missed two contests due to ankle injury. Played extensively in backup role on the offensive line in 2005 and played in 9 games in 2004 as a freshman.

The Georgia offensive line is definately not lacking in size, the average size of our linemen is 6'4" 310 lbs. This starting group was set by the end of spring practice which despite the recent minor injuries to our linemen (ankle sprains) should provide them plenty of time to gel as a unit. The more I discover about this unit, the more confident I feel going into the season. By the end of the season I really expect this to be one of our strongest groups.

Go Dawgs!!!

Oklahoma State Fans

Ok, so over the last few weeks I've been visiting a couple of Oklahoma State fansites. Seems to me that they have some of the most uninformed fans in the Country. Take this post for Example:

SportingOrange: "Georgia to be honest really doesn't
worry me in this game. No gamebreakers or recievers for the talented Stafford to throw to. only 3 returning starters on D. I would be nervous if Gerogia had a high powered offense but as far as I know, I have never seen Georgia just light it up. I also hope they try to over power OSU. I
know Richt better than that. I bet they try and come out passing. Trying to over power us is a little too predictable and Mark richt is abetter coach than that. I really don't think Georgia has the experience or talent to keep up with us. I know I sound pretty bold but I don't care. I know a W when I see one and thats with any team. If Georgia were to play Texas A&m on Sept 1 I would take aTm also. This is too early for Georgia to be playing us. I think they are in over their head on this one and they know it."

Now the Experience part I can understand, but lack of talent. Is this guy crazy or is he ignorant? He actually had me questioning this so I decided to look it up. Over the last 5 years, since that is the furthest back that players could be left on the team. According to Rivals.com and Scout.com:

Rivals.com:
2003 - Georgia 6th , OkSU 15th
2004 - Georgia 6th , OkSU 37th
2005 - Georgia 10th , OkSU 42nd
2006 - Georgia 4th , OkSU 22nd
2007 - Georgia 9th , OkSU 30th
Scout.com
2003 - Georgia 11th , OkSU 29th
2004 - Georgia 6th , OkSU 33rd
2005 - Georgia 4th , OkSU 64th
2006 - Georgia 4th , OkSU 16th
2007 - Georgia 17th , OkSU 24th

Appears to me that the talent level leans heavily towards Georgia. But I'll let you figure it out yourself.

The next statement really got under my skin.

Deuce Said "Thomas Brown is a nobody. "

What is this guy smoking, corn must not be the only thing they grow in Oklahoma!

Lets look at Thomas Browns Stats while sharing time with 2 other big time running backs and playing against some of the top defenses in the country.
2006* - 62 rushes - 256 yards - 4.1 average - 1 TD
2005 - 147 rushes - 736 yards - 5.0 average - 4 TD's
2004 - 172 rushes - 875 yards - 5.1 average - 8 TD's
* Hurt 6th game of the season.

SEC vs. Big 12 Challenge

Over on OrangePower we have been having a discussion on a SEC/Big 12 challege to start of the season for all 12 teams from the Big 12 and the SEC. I of course had to weigh in on this .

I would love to see something like this.

The scheduling would be easy.

Big12 North vs Sec West
Big12 South vs Sec East

Do this 2 years...home and away.
Next 2 years Switch it up

Big 12 North vs. SEC East
Big 12 South vs. SEC West

The teams Play say in 2007 with their rankings in their division from 2006 determing who plays who.
Big12 South #1 vs. SEC East #1
(Oklahoma) vs. (Florida) using 2006 finishing order.

This would be a great thing for college football. It could easily be scheduled for the first game of the Season as we all have non-conference games scheduled that week.

This is something I would love to see, lets here your thoughts.

SEC vs Pac-10

Seems that everyone in the Pac-10 wants to talk about how tough their conference is compared to the SEC. They point to out of conference schedules to prove how tough they are and the SEC people point to in conference schedules.

I decided to do somethings a little different and take 1-10 from the Pac-10 and match them up with 1-10 from the SEC. I did not use conference rankings for this, instead I looked at the teams toatal winning percentage from 2006.

Here are the match-ups.

1. Florida vs. USC (Florida win) gets the nod by being National Champ.

2.LSU vs. California (LSU win)

3.Oregon State vs. Auburn (Auburn win)

4.Arkansas vs. UCLA (UCLA win)

5.Tennesee vs. Oregon (Tenn. win)

6. Georgia vs. Arizona State (Ga. win)

7. Kentucky vs. Washington State (Wash. St. win)

8. Arizona vs. South Carolins (SC win)

9. Washington vs. Alabama (Bama win)

10. Ole Miss vs. Stanford (Ole Miss win)

With this I see the SEC going 8-2. Note that all of this is subjective, but what shows to me is that SEC is a much deeper conference than the Pac-10. The Pac-10 has Southern Cal as it's only elite team and 2-3 good teams, Cal, UCLA, Oregon. After that the PAC really drops off. Elite teams in the SEC Florida, Georgia, Auburn, LSU(Only SEC champs since 2000), good teams in the sec Arkansas, Tennesee, Alabama, South Carolina, and the our lower level teams, and even those could compete with the "good" teams in the Pac-10. The SEC after this comparison is a much tougher conference than the Pac-10. Disagree?? Post your thoughts!
